#1 RESILIENT

Anna Maria Coclite, an assistant professor at Graz University of Technology, is a woman of many firsts. She holds the distinctive honor of being the first woman at her university to receive an ERC Starting Grant. Beyond this achievement, she and her team have made significant strides in the field of biotechnology, successfully creating a 3-in-1 hybrid material for the next generation of smart, artificial skin. Coclite's work is paving the way for future advancements, setting new standards in the field.

In a recent interview with BOLD Digital, Coclite reflected on the challenges brought about by the pandemic. While acknowledging the difficulties and setbacks experienced globally, she also highlighted an unexpected benefit that emerged from this crisis - the expansion of global collaboration. As physical boundaries became irrelevant in the face of remote working, opportunities for collaboration increased exponentially. This shift allowed her and many others to participate more easily in meetings, conferences, and workshops, regardless of location, expanding the potential for collaborative ventures. Coclite's story underscores the potential for growth and positive outcomes even amidst setbacks, illustrating a powerful narrative of adaptation and resilience in the face of adversity.

#2 INSPIRATIONAL

Guillermo Söhnlein, co-founder and CEO of Humans2Venus, is not just a man with a plan – he’s a man with a vision that transcends our planet. His lifelong passion is to make humanity a multi-planet species, and his latest project, “Humans2Venus,” is a testament to that ambition. Guillermo’s strength lies not just in his innovative ideas, but also in his ability to bring together experts from diverse fields, fostering collaboration and synergistic advancements.

In a candid conversation interview showcased on BOLD Digital, Guillermo shared a pivotal setback in his life that ultimately steered him towards his current path. As a child, he dreamt of becoming an astronaut, meticulously charting his pathway to space. At 19, however, his dreams were shattered when his deteriorating eyesight disqualified him from becoming a military jet pilot, the only route to NASA at the time. This setback sent him into a tailspin for years. Reflecting on this period now, Guillermo recognizes that had his eyesight not faltered, he would never have become the entrepreneurial visionary he is today. His journey underscores the power of resilience and adaptability, demonstrating that even significant setbacks can lead to unforeseen opportunities and growth. Today, instead of navigating the stars himself, Guillermo is helping to chart the course for humanity's future among them.

#3 PERSEVERANCE

Justine Sass, Chief of Education for Inclusion and Gender Equality at UNESCO, brings a rich background in International Development, Gender Equality, and Human Rights. Her path to her current position was not always smooth.

In an interview on BOLD Digital, Justine shared her challenging journey to her current role. Despite possessing impressive credentials and a wealth of international experience, she confronted a period of job rejections. Unyielding, she persisted and landed a fellowship at a D.C. research organization. This role, though it came with a smaller salary than expected, proved to be a gateway to invaluable opportunities and mentors. Her story stands as a testament to the power of resilience and patience, turning setbacks into a stepping stone toward success.
