Lessons from Life: Valuable Insights from 5 BOLD Minds

Published on November 2, 2023

Throughout life, we often seek guidance and wisdom from those who have taken bold steps and challenged the norm.

At BOLD Community, a group of innovative thinkers, we had the privilege of asking our members a simple question:

“What has been the most valuable lesson life has taught you so far?”

Their answers are filled with valuable insight, encapsulating their life experiences and resilience.

Join us as we explore what these five extraordinary BOLD Minds shared with us, offering a glimpse into the essence of their life’s journey.

#1 WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Mark Fingerhuth and fellow founders are shaping ProteinQure’s remarkable journey of growth and innovation.

In a recent interview published on BOLD Digital Mark Fingerhuth, the Co-Founder and Head of Research and Development at ProteinQure, shared that he used to dedicate 80 hours a week to his work, finding immense satisfaction in the grind.

However, when the pandemic swept across the globe, it awakened a realization – the things he cherished in his free time could be easily taken away. It was a wake-up call that shifted his perspective.

Mark now prioritizes a healthier work-life balance, and he has discovered that when he recharges, his productivity and overall happiness soars, and he has no desire to return to his previous lifestyle.

“For a time, I worked 80-hour weeks, and it was great. But when the pandemic hit, it showed me how easily the things you like to do in your free time can be taken away. That was a waking-up call.

A career is important, but I am now trying to work a healthy number of hours. When I recharge, I end up being more productive. I am happier overall, and I wouldn’t want to go back to that previous lifestyle.”

#2 PATIENCE

Lisa Mandemaker: Designer of Prototype Artificial Womb, BBC’s 2019 list of 100 Inspiring and Influential Woman

Lisa Mandemaker, a Speculative Designer known for her work on the Artificial Womb prototype shared in a recent  interview featured on BOLD Digital a lesson that might resonate with many of us deeply:  “It is a process.”

This mantra serves as a reminder that perfection is unattainable in a single stroke. Whether it's shaping ideas, building relationships, or deciphering life’s signs, everything requires the gift of time to evolve. Lisa’s insight teaches us the importance of nurturing this process with patience and dedication:

“Something I end up saying a lot is ‘It’s a process.’ I say this to reassure myself that it’s impossible to do everything right at once or at the first time. Ideas, relations, designs, they all need time to grow. And it’s the process that you need to nurture.”

By acknowledging that excellence takes time and that the journey is just as crucial as the destination, we grant ourselves permission to learn, grow, and adapt. It encourages us to be patient, resilient, and creative, while allowing us to build more profound relationships and celebrate the small victories along the way.

So, the next time you find yourself uttering these words, remember that you’re embracing the journey, the heart of personal and professional development.

#3 CONTROL

Cultivating resilience: Justine Sass, UN’s Chief of Education for Inclusion and Gender Equality, shares her life’s wisdom.

Justine Sass, the Chief Section of Education for Inclusion and Gender Equality at the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, brings a wealth of wisdom rooted in her expertise in International Development, Gender Equality, and Human Rights.

In a recent interview published on BOLD Digital, 2023, Justine shares a lesson that holds universal significance. She reminds us that “there is only so much you can control. Be ready for the rest.” This resonates as a profound truth in a world often characterized by uncertainty. Justine’s insight invites us to embrace the unpredictable.

“There is only so much you can control. Be ready for the rest.”

#4 SELFLESSNESS

Guillermo Sanlin, CEO of Humans2 Venus, shares the power of empathy and self-belief in his life’s journey.

Guillermo Söhnlein, the co-founder and CEO of Humans2Venus, is a visionary with a passion for making humanity a multi-planet species. Guillermo’s latest project, “Humans2Venus,” embodies his ambitious goal. His expertise lies in uniting experts from diverse fields and encouraging collaboration.

In a captivating interview featured on BOLD Digital, Guillermo shares a valuable life lesson. He highlights the importance of self-belief and the preciousness of helping others without expecting something in return.

Guillermo’s key to this is empathy – not just putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, but truly seeing the world through their perspective.

“It is important to believe in yourself. But also, I’ve learned what is so precious to me: to help others without regard of what’s in it for me.

The key to that is empathy. You have to not only put yourself in the other person’s shoes but also see the world through their eyes and their brain, not through yours.”

The harmony of self-belief and selflessness represents a delicate dance in the human experience. While self-belief fuels personal growth, empathy and selflessness fuel the greater human connection.

Together, they create a life enriched with purpose and meaning, where helping others becomes a natural extension of self-belief, and true fulfillment is found in selflessly serving the well-being of others.

#5 BABY STEPS

Anna Maria Coclite from TU Graz and her team have succeeded in producing
a 3in1 hybrid material for the next generation of smart, artificial skin.

Anna Maria Coclite, an assistant professor at Graz University of Technology, has earned a well-deserved distinction as the first woman to receive an ERC Starting Grant at the university.

Her pioneering research project, “Smart Core,” focuses on developing a groundbreaking hybrid material for artificial skin equipped with multi-responsive sensors that can simultaneously perceive temperature, humidity, and pressure.

This innovation holds immense promise for fields like biotechnology and tissue engineering. Anna and her team’s work combines state-of-the-art methods, including initiated chemical vapor deposition and atomic layer deposition, at the nanoscale.

In a recent interview featured on BOLD Digital, Anna shared a valuable life lesson:

“Big objectives can be reached only by making reasonably smaller steps one after the other.”

Big objectives are not unattainable fantasies; they are goals that can be achieved through a systematic approach of incremental progress. By breaking them down into reasonably smaller steps, you gain the power to transform even the most daunting of dreams into achievable realities.

So, the next time you’re faced with a monumental objective, remember that it’s not about taking one giant leap. It’s about making one reasonably smaller step after another. Incremental progress is the key to unlocking your potential and turning your grandest aspirations into remarkable achievements.
